Water Jet Erosion Performance of Carbon Fiber and Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymers

Complex engineering challenges are revealed in the wind industry; one of them is erosion at leading edge turbine blades. Water jet erosive wear tests on carbon-fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) and glass-fiber (GFRP) were performed order to determine their resistance conditions tested. Vacuum Infusion Process (VIP) was used obtain composite materials. Eight layers bidirectional carbon fabric (0/90°) nine glass cloth manufacture plates. A water injection platform utilized. The liquid projected with a pressure 150 bar surface specimens through nozzle. samples located 65 mm from nozzle an impact angle 75°, exposure time 10, 20 30 min. SEM optical microscopy observe damage surfaces. 3D profilometer helped roughness see scar profiles. results showed that volume loss for fiber 10 19 mm3, respectively. This means uncoated approximately two times lower than fiber.
